Champion Trees & the Lost Gardens of Yester - East Lothian Archaeology Fortnight
East Lothian Council is organising a series of East Lothian events to mark East Lothian Archaeology and Local History Fortnight. One of particular interest to Gifford residents is a talk and two walks on the Champion Trees and Lost Gardens of Yester. This tells the story of the changing dynamics of the landscape, gardens and buildings of Yester, reflecting fashions from the 13th century onwards. Remnants of Yester's intriguing history can still be seen on the ground and interpreted, though most of its elaborate gardens have been lost.
An hour of illustrated talks will be held in Gifford Village hall, featuring Stephanie Leith, East Lothian Council archaeologist, Kristina Taylor, garden historian and Victoria Fletcher, local historian and a member of the original family who owned Yester. The talk will be accompanied by a 2 hour walk around the estate with Donald Rodger, arboricultural consultant, to look at the champion trees on the estate and evidence of the lost gardens.
Free but booking required and donations to the Gardens Trust gratefully received at the door. Talk: 12 - 1pm, Thursday 6th September in Gifford Village Hall Walks: 9.30 - 11.30am; 2.30-4.30pm
